LONG MARCHERS FOR MUMIA ABU JAMAL REACH 100 MILE MARK! WIND UP LONG MARCH WITH RALLY MAHANOY PRISON FRIDAY!

Monday, December 8th saw a phalanx of dedicated supporters of Mumia Abu Jamal trek through Lehigh Valley Pennsylvania reaching the 100 mile plateau of their 12 Day Long March for Mumia on its 11th Day. They will rally to conclude their epic mission on Tuesday, December 9th at the State Correctional Institution at Mahanoy in Frackville, Pennsylvania where Abu Jamal is serving his life sentence.

December 9th will incredibly mark the 44th anniversary of AbuJamal getting shot and charged with the killing of Philadelphia police officer Daniel Faulkner.

The marching party will arrive at the prison at 12 noon for a press conference and rally restating en masse their demands to ensure that AbuJamal gets the urgent medical treatment that he needs that is key to him not losing his sight.

At issue is the denial of medical treatment for Diabetic Retinopathy and related complications. AbuJamal was literally going blind as the authorities refused to provide the needed immediate treatment, a lasik surgery on each eye. It took nearly ten months and a protest campaign to obtain just one treatment on one eye.

There are no prospects for the second treatment on the other eye. The march also seeks to dramatize how this medical neglect is quite symptomatic of how medical care is harshly provided or not provided in American prisons especially when it comes to aging prisoners.

“The history of how Mumia’s health has been mistreated gives the world, and you better believe we have real eyes on this from around the world, a hard picture of the facade of constitutional protections from ‘cruel and unusual punishment.’

“The abusive medical mistreatment like what we see with Mumia is quite cruel and is also pathetically quite usual in American prisons, especially to aging prisoners,” said Zayid Muhammad, chair of Malcolm X Commemoration Committee, a NY based Human Rights Project that done work on support for American held political prisoners since its inception in 1992.

Muhammad has been a key supporter of AbuJamal since 1990 and is among the marchers who have gone the entire distance.

Highlights of the ten day trek have included State Representative Rick Krajewski calling in to articulate his support for the mission early in the trek. Mumia himself called to state his appreciation on both the first day and on day nine. Among the marchers is Dr Ricardo Alvarez, Abu-Jamal’s West coast medical consultant. Dr Alvarez got to see AbuJamal several days ago. He is also among the marchers marching the entire distance. AbuJamal was also visited by two of his France based stalwart supporters Jacky Hortaut, of Collective de Liberons Mumia Abu Jamal or the Collective for Mumia Abu Jamal’s Liberation, and critically acclaimed journalist Pierre Barbancey. Nationally celebrated Sports Writer Dave Zirin, whose social justice writings are as highly regarded as his sports journalism, visited the marchers at the end of Day Ten. When the trek reached its midway point in Reading, marchers encountered Pastor Evelyn Morrison, who just happened to be in the Reading chapter of the Black Panther Party in her youth. Pastor Morrison immediately got on the phone to the Governor’s office and reached the Lieutenant Governor’s staff to register her concerns for AbuJamal’s care. Lawrence Hamm, who led a 67 mile march in New Jersey around police brutality recently, an important local inspiration, suffered an auto accident en route to the march one day, but was able to secure transportation to the march to fulfill his word to be among the marchers who will march the entire distance!
